The site for the Ballarat House is set within a suburban golfing estate on the western fringe of Ballarat.  The house seeks to compose itself through the restraint of a few key gestures alongside the refined handling of an otherwise robust palette.   The plan was developed to allow a degree of internal flexibility, grouping the living spaces the clients required for daily life toward the rear of the site, taking advantage of the north sun and opening onto the back yard. One first encounters the refined folded steel gutter, and transitions along the entry deck as the project unfolds toward the rear of the site.  The wide entry hallway extends through the middle of the plan, timber conceals the utility spaces and pitches in height toward the living spaces - a welcoming and generous gesture given to the modest footprint of the house.    The ceiling continues to rake to the north and enhances the humble scale of the entry up into the generous living volume, whilst allowing sunlight deep into the concrete slab through winter.         The ceiling continues to rake to the north and enhances the humble scale of the entry up into the generous living volume, whilst allowing sunlight deep into the concrete slab through winter.   The material palette is controlled, cypress cladding extends from the external elevation along the length of the hallway wrapping the garage and utility space and acts as an orientation device. The timber beams set the discipline of the structural grid, and gently extend to a taper at both ends to externally express themselves and provide continuity and clarity to the simple overall pitch of the project.   Externally the robust blockwork on the east and west reflects the internal profile and are extruded past the north and south face of the building, providing depth and articulation to these facades.   Offset against the heavy blade walls, the roof canopy is simple and refined as it tapers to a point, and allows the folded steel gutter to cut a sharp silhouette against the undulating roof forms of the adjoining buildings.          Ballarat, Victoria Status - Completed Builder - Tim Rickard Construction Photography - Derek Swalwell

The North Melbourne Terrace is a double volume alteration and addition to the rear of an existing single story Victorian terrace house. The new additions respond to the existing building, whist opening up the enclosed spaces to a generous living volume, light, and a refined structure and material pallet. The double height volume houses a new lower level bathroom, kitchen and living space as well as a generous upper main bedroom and ensuite suspended through the vertical steel frames.   The upper level hood extends externally to provide privacy to and from adjacent properties, whist elongating the footprint and directing the outlook to the rear of the site.  The double height volume links upper and lower levers and allows sunlight deep into the living space in winter, with fully automated external louvers for privacy and solar adjustment. The material palette has been carefully selected with external compressed sheet combined with refined steel edges to create a precise and functional enclosure.  Honed bluestone flooring and steelwork combine to further enrich the white internal surfaces.  The sophisticated tones of the bathroom further emphasise the privacy of the space through their deep tones including granite tiles, bluestone and custom formed concrete bath and basins.   Perforated compressed sheet panels operate alongside timber batten panels and double glazing to screen the spaces and offer a sense of security while allowing the building to breath.            Location - North Melbourne, Victoria Status - Completed Builder - Warrick Home Builders Photography - Derek Swalwell Sylist - Bek Sheppard

The Torquay house is located on the front esplanade with wide-ranging coastal views over Fishermans Beach, Point Danger and the ocean horizon. The house responds to the streetscape, but presents a sharp edge to the esplanade and onshore winds.  Pitching to the north the roof allows sun deep into the upper level, while taking in the coastline and projecting views over the bay.  The linear floor plan stretches through the defined structural grid.  Lower level rooms promote a sense of refuge and privacy through the integration of honed masonry, concrete ceilings and blackbutt panel, while the upper level reveals a generous open living area with a finer structural format and floating roof.          The steel work and construction has been expertly fabricated and erected to further enhance the refinement and finesse of the canopy over the durable masonry base. Utility spaces are housed towards the rear and open through internal spaces to reinforce the ocean aspect.  Fine external tallowwood screens and panels offer tactility and privacy to the robust palette.  Landscaping and fences by others. Jan Juc Studio explores ideas related to structural clarity and enclosure. The building is envisaged as a large deck space that gently floats across the undulating site. A series of sliding doors that extend around the perimeter of the house allow the internal spaces to be adapted to suit the climatic conditions. In summer the building opens to the site and allows sea breezes to naturally ventilate the interior while in winter the internal spaces close down. Timber columns expressed on the outside of the dwelling define the internal spaces and frame views across the heavily treed site. Transition zones are pushed to the perimeter of the house, internal spaces can be opened to the transition areas creating a type of verandah around the entire perimeter of the interior or closed off to provide more intimate spaces. The sharp lines of the roof and gently tapering roof structure are a continued exploration of structural clarity and expression from earlier projects, in particular the ballarat house.
